Spectra Speaks
Founder, Executive Editor
Spectra is an award-winning Nigerian writer, women’s rights activist, and the voice behind the African feminist media blog, Spectra Speaks (www.spectraspeaks.com), which publishes global news, opinions, and stories about gender, culture, media, and the Diaspora.
In 2006, Spectra founded Queer Women of Color and Friends (QWOC+ Boston), a grassroots organization that creates safe spaces for lesbian, bisexual, transgender and/or queer women of color, including immigrants and the African diaspora, and the producers of QWOC Week, a multicultural pride festival that features art, music, literary, and social events intended to raise awareness of the issues impacting queer women of color around the world. Five years later, she launched the QWOC Media Wire in order to strategically address the dearth of marginalized voices represented in mainstream media.

Spectra’s thought leadership on diversity, movement building, and a media as a tool for social change has taken her from school auditoriums across the US to international conferences. Her writing has been published in a variety of print and online media outlets, including Color Magazine, Racialicious, Gender Across Borders, Role Reboot, Bitch Magazine, and more. She is currently working on an anthology of LGBT African women’s stories, and will be travelling through southern Africa collecting untold stories.
